The National Institute for Automotive Excellence is responsible for regulating the industry. A certification from the ASE is the recognized industry credential for individuals in this profession  which is why it is in the best interest of technicians and mechanics alike to seek registration and certification with the ASE. It does affect one’s employment and earning opportunities. So while certification may not necessarily be a requirement, it is an advantage for mechanics that have it.

How to qualify for ASE diesel mechanic certification in Florida?

There are two basic requirements to obtain ASE certification. First, an applicant needs to take the test and pass it. Second, a two year working experience must be completed. For the advanced level certification however, a three year hands on experience is required.

An applicant is allowed to take the test even before the work experience requirement is completed. However, the diesel mechanic certification in Florida will not be awarded until the second requirement is fulfilled.

There are various ASE certification programs available and there are several categories to choose from too. The certifying tests vary and they are divided into nine separate categories or areas of specialization. These categories include automatic transmission, air conditioning, brakes, engine repair, transmission and the like. Exam topics shall include matters involved within the selected category.

How to register for the certification exams?

Before registering to take the ASE certification test, an individual is advised to choose a specific area of specialization. Either a written test or a computer based test may be chosen. And an applicant has three options for registration. These are the following.

  • Snail mail certification application along with the form and all other required documents with the payment fee

  • After filing the application, an applicant should expect to receive an admission ticket from the mail. It should be received fourteen days after the registration or application is filed. The test schedule as well as the testing center may be chosen upon registration through the website. All information pertaining to the certification exams shall be view-able from the site. Practice tests may also be accessed online.

    There are various testing centers including sites in Florida. Applicants should remember though that the testing center’s only responsibility is to oversee and facilitate the exams. Results will be released via mail. Applicants who have not received test results within the prescribed period can follow up with the ASE using the toll free hotline.
